Ahead of today’s judgment in the case of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, the Abia State Police Command has announced heightened security measures across the state to forestall any breach of peace.
Kanu, who hails from Abia, is expected to know his fate today in his long-standing legal battle with the Federal Government. In anticipation of possible reactions, the police say they are taking no chances.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, in a statement released on Wednesday, said the state Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, had assured that Abia remains peaceful but noted that full security arrangements have been activated ahead of the ruling.
Quoting Isa, she said, “We have already placed security coverage to monitor the entire state. We put some security strategies in place to make sure there is no breakdown of law and order.”
Chinaka explained that the police have intensified patrols and surveillance to maintain calm across all parts of the state.
The command, according to Chinaka, is working closely with other security agencies to ensure sustained peace.
“I tell you, in Abia State, officers of the Abia State Police Command, under the Commissioner of Police, are all out to ensure that law and order is maintained. And of course, we are collaborating with other sister security agencies to ensure we maintain safety,” she said.
She emphasised that the state remains safe and that the police, as the lead internal security agency, are fully prepared to protect lives and property.
Chinaka disclosed that the police already conduct joint operations every Monday with other security agencies and that Thursday’s ruling will be accorded similar preparedness.
She added, “So, Abia is safe. The command, as the lead internal security agency at all times, is out to ensure the maintenance of law and order and protection of life and property.
“So, the command is not expecting any anti-behaviour on Thursday, whichever way the judgment goes. That’s why I said that officers are on the ground 24/7. The command is always out to ensure that the state is safe.”
