Kanye West is opening up like never before in In Whose Name?, a new documentary from director Nico Ballesteros that hit theaters Friday.

The film spans six years of the rapper and producer’s life, tracing the highs, lows, and deeply personal moments that have defined his complicated journey in the spotlight.

In one candid moment, he admits he would “rather be dead than to be on medication,” a blunt reference to his bipolar diagnosis.

Another emotional scene comes during a confrontation between Ye and Kris Jenner, the mother of his former wife, Kim Kardashian.

“No one from the family has taken any responsibility for my hospital visit,” Ye tells Jenner, voicing frustrations about how his 2016 hospitalization was handled in the public eye.

When Kris initially tries to brush off the online chatter, Ye pushes back yelling, “It does matter! It does matter!”

Finally, Jenner, fighting back tears, responds softly off camera: “Yes, yes, yes. I’m saying yes, and I love you. I don’t want you to be not perfect. I love you and I want my daughter to love you the way you want her to love you.”
