ANOTHER Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match was marred by violence today, with Barau FC player Nana Abraham severely injured by Katsina United fans in Katsina.
Abraham was left bleeding profusely after the Katsina United fans invaded the pitch and inflicted a deep cut on his neck with a sharp object.
The ugly incident occurred moments after Barau’s Orji Kalu netted in the 69th minute to level the score at 1-1.
The goal and ensuing celebration apparently incensed some Katsina United supporters inside the stadium, and they resorted to violence.
Instead of the match to be called off following the life-threatening attack on the Barau FC player, the referee allowed it to resume after a brief break.
The game ended 1-1 after security operatives intervened to restore order and protect the players.
Reports from Barau FC indicated that Abraham was in stable condition after receiving medical attention.
This is the second of such disturbing incident in the NPFL in a matter of weeks, after unruly Kano Pillars fans invaded the pitch and attacked 3SC players and match officials at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
Kano Pillars were fined N9.5m and docked three points for the violent conduct and lax security.
Incidentally, part of Kano Pillars’ sanctions was banishment to Katsina, the same venue of today’s mayhem.
