The Matrix Resurrections star Keanu Reeves has lined up his next sci-fi movie after The Matrix Resurrections bombed at the box office. After starring in hits like Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Speed, The Matrix solidified Reeves’ position as a giant movie star.

After releasing three films from 1999 to 2003, the franchise was revived in 2021 with The Matrix Resurrections, but it only made $160.2 million at the box office on a $190 million budget.

According to THR, Reeves has signed on to star in a new sci-fi film called Shiver, with Deadpool‘s Tim Miller as director, All of You‘s Aaron Ryder and Kingsman‘s Matthew Vaughn as producers, and Infinite‘s Ian Shorr as screenwriter.

In Shiver, a smuggler is in the Caribbean Sea while trying to complete a mission when he faces a major betrayal that proves fatal. The smuggler gets stuck in a time loop and must figure out how to stop the chaos.

THR described the film as a cross between Edge of Tomorrow (due to the time loop element) and the shark thriller The Shallows.

The filmmakers have experience with sci-fi projects, including Shorr on Infinite and Miller with Terminator: Dark Fate.

Along with Reeves, The Matrix Resurrections starred Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Lambert Wilson, Christina Ricci, Freema Agyeman and Jada Pinkett Smith.

After the fourth film not only underperformed at the box office but also received a 63% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Reeves stepped back into the titular role of John Wick in John Wick: Chapter 4. The fourth instalment earned over $440 million at the box office and scored a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Reeves also appeared in DC League of Super Pets, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, John Wick spinoff Ballerina and Good Fortune, and starred on Broadway in Waiting for Godot.

After delving into superhero and video adaptations, as well as action thrillers and supernatural comedies, Reeves has decided to return to the genre that made him a superstar.

The Matrix Resurrections may have had an underwhelming reception when Reeves stepped back into Neo’s shoes, but that’s not stopping the actor from finding a new story and character to explore. Reeves, Miller, Ryder, Vaughn and Shorr were already on board when Shiver was pitched to various movie studios. Now Warner Bros. is finalizing a deal to produce the film.
