In a jubilant ceremony on Wednesday, Kebbi State Commissioner for Education, Halima Bande, formally handed over 24 rescued Maga schoolgirls to their families, bringing closure to one of the state’s most distressing abduction cases.
The ceremony, held in Birnin Kebbi, was filled with prayers and celebration as parents reunited with their children, following their rescue from terrorists after one week in captivity.
Naijaonpoint reports that Bande publicly cleared concerns about mistreatment, assuring that the girls returned unharmed.
“The girls I handed over are in very good health and were never molested by terrorists while they were in captivity,” she confirmed.
She further commended Governor Idris, who, according to her, worked tirelessly to ensure their safe return.
“We can’t thank the governor enough for his doggedness. He has been restless and has lost sleep since then,” Bande said.
Speaking on behalf of the students’ parents, Malam Illiyasu Garba praised the governor for his firmness throughout the rescue mission.
“We already have a firm belief that whatever the governor Idris cannot do does exist; therefore, we have conviction and confidence that our children will return safely,” he said.
Bande also extended appreciation to the Nigerian military, clerics and all stakeholders who supported the rescue efforts, thanking them for their role “directly or indirectly” in securing the girls’ freedom.
Responding after receiving the students, Kebbi’s First Lady, Zainab Nasare Idris, acknowledged the fear and public anxiety the abduction generated, but urged parents not to abandon education because of the incident.
She assured residents that stronger safeguards would be put in place to prevent a repeat.
“Proper measures will be taken to ensure nothing of such happens in Kebbi State,” she said, adding her gratitude to Allah for the success of the operation.
