AN unidentified disease has reportedly led to the deaths of five students at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA).

Some students, speaking anonymously since the university has not released an official statement, disclosed that four students passed away under mysterious circumstances last week, while another succumbed on Sunday after falling ill overnight.

A source revealed that officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) visited the university last week to raise awareness about the dangers of meningitis.

However, it remains unclear whether meningitis was responsible for the deaths of the two students who passed away before their visit.

According to university records, when contacted, the university’s registrar, Maimaru Alhaji Tilli, confirmed the deaths of four students.

“Yes, four students have died according to our records, but the cause remains unknown. The Ministry of Health has advised us to take precautionary measures, including reducing congestion in student accommodations,” Tilli stated.

He further mentioned that he had officially written to the Commissioner for Higher Education, Isah Abubakar Tunga, requesting guidance on how to prevent further fatalities.

A student leader also confirmed the deaths and revealed that the Students’ Union Government (SUG) had formally urged the university management to shut down the institution to prevent further casualties.
