Fulham manager Marco Silva has backed Calvin Bassey to become one of the Premier League’s top centre-backs following his outstanding display in the 3-2 win over Liverpool at Craven Cottage, Footynaija.com reports.

The Nigeria international returned to the starting line-up for the Cottagers and delivered a commanding performance, keeping Mohamed Salah — the league’s top scorer with 27 goals — from registering a single shot on target.

Calvin has all the skills to be a top central defender,” Silva told BBC Match of the Day. “He ticks all the boxes to be a top, top player. Now he has to be more consistent.”

Bassey, who joined Fulham from Ajax, was crucial to a resolute defensive effort, making three tackles, one interception, five clearances and a blocked shot. His contribution proved vital as Fulham secured a memorable result that could boost their European hopes.

Former Republic of Ireland striker Clinton Morrison was also left impressed by the excellent performance from Bassey.

Of the Super Eagles star, Morrison said: “Calvin Bassey was the best player on the pitch keeping Mo Salah, the best player in the Premier League this season, quiet. The result gives Fulham a real European chance now.”

Fulham’s form has been impressive.

They are currently eighth in the Premier League, just three points behind fifth-placed Manchester City. Silva’s men have now taken four points off league leaders Liverpool and completed a double over League Cup winners Newcastle.
