A jailbreak at the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, saw 12 inmates escape in the early hours this morning, with security agencies managing to re-arrest one of the fugitives.
The Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the incident as “unfortunate”, assuring the public that the state government is working closely with security agencies to prevent a recurrence.
Fanwo raised concerns over how the inmates escaped without causing structural damage, suggesting the possibility of internal sabotage.
He called for a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape and to ensure that the fleeing inmates are recaptured.
Governor Usman Ododo has also directed security agencies to tighten security and prevent future breaches.
“We call on the public to report any suspicious individuals in their communities. Anyone found harbouring an escaped inmate will be held accountable,” Fanwo warned.
He reassured residents that there was no cause for panic, urging them to go about their daily activities with confidence in the government’s commitment to security.
