THE Kogi State Government has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic boat accident on the River Niger that claimed the lives of at least 26 traders.
According to reports, the victims were traveling from Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State to Ilushi market in neighboring Edo State yesterday evening, when the mishap occurred.
Confirming the development in a statement today, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, said the death toll had risen to 26.
“This heartbreaking tragedy has taken the lives of no fewer than 26 passengers. Our prayers and condolences go to their families and the people of Ibaji in this time of mourning,” the statement read.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, through the statement, extended his condolences to the bereaved families and directed the State Emergency Management Agency to work with local authorities to provide immediate support to those affected.
He further assured that the state would strengthen collaboration with federal agencies to improve safety measures on waterways and prevent similar tragedies.
The governor also urged communities living along riverine areas to prioritize safety by avoiding overloading and ensuring the use of life jackets during water travel.
“The Government of Kogi State stands firmly with the people of Ibaji LGA and will continue to support them through this painful period,” the statement added.
