Kogi Assembly Extends Tenure Of Local Government Chairmen

The Transition Committee Chairmen’s tenure has been prolonged by an additional six months by the Kogi State House of Assembly.

Naijaonpoint reports that this decision was reached during the House plenary on Friday.

The extension of the chairmen’s tenure was based on a letter from Governor Ahmed Ododo, citing financial constraints and high wage bills as reasons for ...ponement of Local Government elections in the state.

During the plenary, Speaker of the House Umar Yusuf, who read the letter, urged the chairmen to represent their Local Governments effectively.

“In the next six months, it will be interesting at the Local Government level as there will be mostly submission of reports to the Assembly. The Chairmen henceforth should take note of this,” he stated.

It is worth noting that the term of office for the 21 Transition Committee Chairmen in Kogi State was set to end on July 8, 2024.

After receiving the house’s approval, it is anticipated that the Transition Committee Chairmen will leave their positions on January 8, 2025, following the completion of the local government elections.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has cautioned the Rivers State Local Government Chairmen whose tenure have expired against causing trouble in the state.

The PDP, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the affected local government chairmen should peacefully accept that their tenures have expired according to the provisions of the law.

It therefore called on the individuals to desist from any act that may disrupt the peace and stability of the state.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cautions the immediate past Rivers State Local Government Chairmen whose tenure has expired against any conduct that is capable of disrupting the peace in the State.

“The Party notes that the three-year tenure in office of the former Rivers State Local Government Executive Councils has expired by the effluxion of time under the relevant State Law establishing the Rivers State Local Government Council Administration.

“The PDP therefore counsels the former Rivers State Local Government Council Chairmen to desist from any action that may constitute disruption in Local Government administration in the State.

“The Party calls on the people of Rivers State to remain calm, law-abiding and continue to work together for the continued stability, peace and delivery of democracy dividends in Rivers State,” the statement reads.
