WATCH THE VIDEO HERE A Kogi State High Court sitting in Lokoja has ordered a stay of execution on the removal of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Ahmed Anaje, pending the outcome of an appeal filed by the state government. Justice Umar Salisu of High Court VI granted the order on Thursday following an application from the Kogi State Attorney General, Muiz Abdullahi (SAN), and the embattled monarch. The application seeks to suspend the court’s earlier judgment, delivered on February 3, which nullified Anaje’s appointment. The initial ruling came after Daudu Adeku-Ojiah, Hussain Yusuf, and Abdulrahaam Suberu challenged the monarch’s appointment by former Governor Yahaya Bello. During Thursday’s hearing, Abdullahi, who represented Governor Usman Ododo alongside the state government as the 1st and 2nd defendants, said the appeal had already been filed at the Court of Appeal in Abuja. Z.E. Abbas Esq. represented the Ohinoyi as the 3rd defendant. “We prayed the court to stay the execution of the judgment delivered on February 3 in Suit No. HCO/05C/2024, pending the determination of the appeal lodged at the Court of Appeal on February 4,” Abdullahi said. The applicants further argued that the trial judge erred in law by assuming jurisdiction over the case, which, according to them, led to a miscarriage of justice. “The judgment was against the weight of evidence presented during the trial,” they contended. The court subsequently ordered all parties to maintain the status quo until the appeal is determined.
