THE Kogi State Police Command has foiled an attempted attack on its Obajana Operational Base and arrested several suspected criminals involved in the operation.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued yesterday in Lokoja by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP William Aya.

He explained that the incident followed a recent security offensive carried out across the state, which was supported by precision airstrikes from the Nigeria Police Force Air Wing targeting known criminal hideouts, flashpoints, and assembly areas.

According to Aya, the success of the earlier operation is believed to have triggered a retaliation attempt by sleeper cells of criminal gangs.

He said the suspects tried to attack police assets and facilities at the Obajana base but were promptly confronted by officers on duty.

The police spokesperson noted that operatives responded with a coordinated counter-operation, successfully repelling the attackers and weakening their capacity.

Several suspects were arrested during the exchange, some of whom sustained gunshot injuries.

He added that security forces are continuing efforts to track down other suspects who fled the scene, while investigations are underway to determine the source and motive behind the attempted attack.

Aya further revealed that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Special Operations, AIG Alonyenu F. Idu, alongside the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, visited the facility to assess the situation firsthand.

During the visit, the AIG commended the officers for their bravery and urged them to remain vigilant and professional in the fight against banditry and other criminal activities.

The police reassured residents of Obajana and surrounding communities that security operations would be sustained and intensified until criminal networks in the state are fully dismantled.

Members of the public were also encouraged to support law enforcement agencies by providing timely information and reporting suspicious activities to help maintain peace and safety across Kogi State.
