After becoming Netflix’s biggest hit of all-time, KPop Demon Hunters 2 is finally moving forward. The animated film about a K-pop girl group who secretly protect the world from demons quickly became one of the most talked-about movies of 2025 after its June release. In addition to securing a near-perfect 95% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, KPop Demon Hunters also set a new record for Netflix’s most-watched original title with 325 million views.
Bloomberg has brought word that Netflix and Sony are officially working on KPop Demon Hunters 2 is now in the works, with a release window planned for 2029. At the time of writing, neither studio have come out to announce the sequel themselves, nor is it currently known which creative figures will return from the first film.
Though the studios behind it may not have shed light on it yet, it doesn’t come as a surprise that KPop Demon Hunters 2 is happening. A short film expansion has already been produced, while the movie’s viral popularity has led to merchandise frequently selling out, and the movie’s sing-along theatrical release becoming Netflix’s biggest ever, finishing in first place in its weekend and having thus far grossed about $25 million.
The other sign that pointed to Netflix and Sony moving ahead with the sequel was the recent announcement that the two were also reuniting for The Mitchells vs. The Machines‘ sequel. The 2021 film saw a similar level of acclaim to KPop Demon Hunters, earning itself an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, and solid viewership, which makes Sony and Netflix’s sequel planning a sign of more to come.
While it’s currently unclear who will be at the helm for the sequel, it’s hard to imagine KPop Demon Hunters 2 won’t have Maggie Kang back in some capacity. Being the originator of the film’s concept before co-writing the script and directing it, Kang previously confirmed plans to ScreenRant for both a sequel and side stories, with the aim of tackling backstories for Mira and Zoey, as well as future stories.
The biggest point of curiosity for fans of the first film is likely to be the four-year wait for KPop Demon Hunters 2‘s 2029 release. Animated productions generally take years of work, with most studios setting release dates years after a film’s announcement in order to give their animators time. However, with Kang and her team having already cooked up some early ideas for the next installment, getting to work sooner could see Huntr/x get an earlier release than currently planned.
