THE former Kano State Governor and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said he would only consider joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) if there are firm guarantees regarding the future of the Kano State government and the protection of his political supporters.
Speaking today at his Miller Road residence in Kano during a meeting with party leaders and supporters from Rano and Dawakin Tofa Local Government Areas, Kwankwaso stressed that any move to the APC must come with clear assurances on the fate of NNPP lawmakers and loyalists.
According to him, past experiences have made his camp cautious, recalling instances where his supporters helped form governments but were later marginalised.
He questioned whether the APC’s stance toward his political structure had genuinely changed.
Kwankwaso said no concrete assurance had been offered so far to guarantee the retention of the party’s political structure or continued control of the state government, noting that clarity on these issues was essential before any decision could be made.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo; the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Yusuf Kofar Mata; the NNPP state chairman, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa; and other senior party officials, all of whom reaffirmed their loyalty to Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Observers say the strong show of support underscores Kwankwaso’s influence within Kano politics and highlights growing internal tensions amid speculation over a possible defection by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the APC.
Analysts add that Kwankwaso’s position reflects a strategic effort to safeguard party structures and loyalists ahead of the 2027 general elections.
