THE Kwara State Police Command has apprehended four suspects linked to the killing of the Chief Imam of Sokunkpan village in Tsaragi, Edu Local Government Area.
In a statement released today, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed that the tragic incident took place on November 4, 2025, around 9:30 p.m.
According to the police, the violence erupted after the death of a 25-year-old man, Ibrahim Gana, who had been receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Following his death, Gana’s brothers, identified as Mohammed Shaba and Mahmud Gana, reportedly accused the village’s Chief Imam, Alhaji Abdullahi Audu, of causing their brother’s demise.
Acting on the accusation, they allegedly mobilised a mob that attacked the cleric with dangerous weapons, resulting in his death.
Police operatives swiftly intervened, arresting four suspects, while efforts are ongoing to track down others involved.
“Four suspects have been arrested, and a full investigation is underway. The Command assures the public that justice will be served,” Ejire-Adeyemi stated.
Condemning the act, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, described the mob attack as a clear case of jungle justice and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
“No one has the right to take another person’s life. Resorting to mob action only leads to more chaos,” he said, stressing that those found guilty will face the full weight of the law.
The police chief also urged residents to remain calm and assist authorities by providing credible information that could aid the investigation.
“The Command remains committed to maintaining peace, safety, and order in all parts of the state, especially in Edu LGA where the incident occurred,” Ojo assured.
He reiterated that under his leadership, the Kwara State Police Command would continue to uphold professionalism, integrity, and accountability in its operations.
