THE National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has appointed Senator Nenadi Usman as the Interim National Chairperson and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as the Interim National Secretary during its meeting held today in Abuja.
The newly constituted interim working committee will manage the party’s affairs until a national convention is held to elect a new NEC.
The NEC also approved a timetable for the conduct of ward, local government, state, zonal congresses, and the national convention.
The Labour Party Secretariat has been directed to release clear guidelines and timelines to ensure free and fair elections at every level.
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including NLC President Joe Ajaero and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, the party’s only sitting governor.
Speaking at the event, Ajaero emphasized the party’s identity as a platform for the common people and urged members to stay focused despite ongoing internal challenges.
“Anyone claiming to be chairman without the support of the Labour movement is simply dreaming. When the time comes, we’ll make it clear who we recognize,” Ajaero said.
Governor Alex Otti called on party members to work diligently to strengthen the Labour Party.
He affirmed that the NEC meeting followed the recent Supreme Court judgment, which recognized Nenadi Usman as the legitimate chairperson of the party.
“We’re here to formalize the interim national working committee in line with the court’s decision. This is a step toward rebuilding and repositioning the party,” he said.
While thanking the NLC for forming the party, Otti noted that the LP has grown beyond its roots and now represents a broader national interest.
He urged unity, humility, and dedication among members, stressing the need to restructure and rebrand the party for lasting relevance and success.
