THE Lagos State House of Assembly has summoned five major ride-hailing platforms—Uber, Bolt, Indrive, Rida, and LagRide—for a public hearing to address rising tensions and alleged labour rights violations within the sector.
This development was confirmed in a statement released by Steven Iwindoye, Public Relations Officer of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), on behalf of the union’s Lagos Chairman, Azeez Jaiyesimi.
According to the union, the hearing—scheduled for tomorrow, June 17—is in response to a formal petition submitted to the Assembly by AUATON. The hearing aims to tackle mounting concerns around workers’ welfare, safety, and the regulatory practices of ride-hailing companies in Lagos.
“The Lagos State House of Assembly has summoned Uber, Bolt, Indrive, Rida, and LagRide to appear for a public hearing… to address the growing unrest in the ride-hailing sector and create a framework for safer, fairer, and more accountable operations in the Nigerian gig economy,” Jaiyesimi stated.
The petition, titled “Public Petition Against Uber, Bolt, Indrive, Rida, and LagRide for Non-Compliance with the National Collective Agreement and Corporate Negligence, Resulting in the Victimisation of App-Based Transport Workers in Nigeria,” accuses the companies of various forms of exploitation.
The key grievances raised in the petition included ‘Driver Profiling and Passenger Safety’, ‘Unilateral Pricing Policies’; ‘Lack of Welfare Support’; ‘Commission Discrepancies’; ‘Suppression of Union Rights’, among other issues
The union further alleged that these companies have continued to operate with disregard for national labour regulations, endangering the welfare of thousands of drivers.
The Lagos Assembly’s decision to convene this hearing underscores the growing call for greater accountability in Nigeria’s expanding gig economy, particularly within the transport sector.
