The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is currently investigating the Chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area, Muibi Folawiyo, alleging his involvement in large-scale corruption.

ICPC spokesperson Demola Bakare confirmed Folawiyo’s arrest in a statement made available to the media on Wednesday, stating that the council chair is being investigated for allegedly stealing public funds, diverting resources for personal use, and bypassing official procedures.

The statement noted that the council chair was arrested at the council secretariat on 42 Broad Street, Lagos, after repeatedly ignoring invitations which he acknowledged.

“He is currently in our custody. He was arrested by a team from the ICPC Headquarters for the aforementioned reasons but has since been granted administrative bail. He is expected to report back today as the investigation continues,” Bakare said.

Meanwhile, the Osun State chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has filed a notice to discontinue its legal case against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and elected local government chairmen from the controversial October 15, 2022, council polls.

The decision was communicated to the Osun State High Court sitting in Ilesa through a notice of discontinuance dated June 25, 2025, signed by Musbau Adetunbi (SAN), counsel to the claimant.

A copy of the notice, obtained by Punch on Tuesday, has also been served on Fatima Raji, counsel to the APC.

Naijaonpoint reports that the ongoing legal and political dispute between the PDP-led Osun State Government and the opposition APC has crippled operations at the grassroots level.

Following the assumption of office by APC-backed chairmen, federal allocations to the local councils were reportedly frozen since February.

Civil servants under NULGE had also boycotted work, protesting the occupation of local government secretariats by the APC chairmen, prompting the union to file suit number HIK/5/2025.

The suit listed the APC, its elected chairmen, and security agencies, including the Inspector-General of Police, the Osun State Police Commissioner, the DSS Director-General, and the NSCDC Commandant-General, as defendants. Also listed were the Governor of Osun State and the State Attorney General.

NULGE stated in its notice that the withdrawal is tied to the June 13, 2025, ruling of the Court of Appeal, which it believes addressed the substantive legal questions raised in its suit.
