LAGOS: Govt hails Supreme Court’s nullification of National Lottery Act

The ruling invalidated the National Lottery Act, affirming the constitutional authority of State Governments to regulate lotteries and gaming activities within their jurisdictions.

In a statement, the State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described the judgment as a historic victory for the rule of law, federalism, and the constitutional rights of states.

“The Supreme Court’s decision firmly establishes that the regulation of lotteries and gaming is a residual matter, under the exclusive purview of State Governments. This judgment strengthens the principles of true federalism, enabling states to independently oversee effective regulation,” he said.

Omotoso further acknowledged the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who has long championed the cause of true federalism, and noted that this judgment represents a significant milestone in the nation’s restructuring efforts.

He also praised the steadfast efforts of Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, Lagos’ former governor, for advancing the constitutional challenge and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his commitment to upholding the rule of law and defending the rights of Lagosians.

“This outcome reflects the unwavering dedication of Governor Sanwo-Olu to integrity in governance and his efforts to set a benchmark for true federalism,” the statement read.

The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) remains the sole regulator for lotteries and gaming in Lagos State.

The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring that gaming activities are conducted transparently, responsibly, and in accordance with international standards.

The statement called on illegal and unlicensed lottery and gaming operators to approach the LSLGA for regularisation or face prosecution.

Omotoso assured that the state would continue to foster a conducive environment for licensed operators while safeguarding residents from the negative effects of unregulated gaming.

“Lagos State is dedicated to creating a business-friendly atmosphere for legitimate operators and ensuring that the gaming sector contributes significantly to the state’s economic development and the prosperity of its citizens,” he concluded.
