LAGOS: Govt orders closure of Oshodi pedestrian bridge over safety concerns

This directive was announced yesterday by Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation.

The government’s decision is a proactive measure aimed at preventing potential accidents and ensuring the safety of the thousands of commuters who use the bridge each day.

Osiyemi explained that the contractor responsible for the bridge’s construction has been instructed to secure the entrances with concrete barriers to restrict access.

“This action is essential to protect pedestrians who depend on this infrastructure. The safety of Lagosians is our top priority, and this precautionary measure demonstrates our commitment to their well-being,” Osiyemi stated.

He added that the closure will facilitate a thorough structural assessment of the bridge to determine if repairs or complete reconstruction are necessary.

This evaluation will ensure that the bridge complies with the highest safety standards before it is reopened to the public.

In the meantime, pedestrians are advised to use an alternative bridge located just 30 meters away.

Osiyemi encouraged residents to support the government’s efforts to enhance safety, noting that any inconvenience is a small price to pay to prevent potential disasters.

Commuters at Oshodi, one of Lagos’s busiest transportation hubs, expressed mixed reactions to the announcement.
