The Lagos State Government has ordered an investigation into allegations of medical negligence linked to the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of acclaimed Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, at a private hospital in the state.
The toddler, one of Adichie’s twin sons, reportedly died after a short illness earlier in the week. In a statement released on Saturday, the author alleged that her son’s death was caused by what she described as criminal negligence on the part of an anaesthesiologist involved in the child’s treatment.
She said the child initially showed symptoms of a mild cold, which later worsened into a severe infection.
Euracare Hospital, where the child was treated, said it had begun an internal investigation into the incident. In a statement, the hospital expressed condolences to the family and described the loss as devastating, while noting that some public reports contained inaccuracies.
The hospital explained that the child had been referred to its facility for specialised diagnostic procedures after receiving care at two other paediatric centres. It added that its medical team provided treatment in line with accepted clinical standards and worked with external medical teams recommended by the family. However, the hospital confirmed that the child died less than 24 hours after admission.
Reacting to the development, the Lagos State Government said it had been formally notified of the incident and described the case as deeply distressing. In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, the government expressed condolences to Adichie and her family.

The statement reaffirmed the state’s zero tolerance for medical negligence and disclosed that the governor had directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency to conduct an independent and transparent investigation into the matter.
According to the government, HEFAMAA has already visited the hospital and commenced a detailed review of all allegations and reports connected to the case.
The agency is also expected to work with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and other regulatory bodies to ensure a professional and credible inquiry.
The government said the investigation would examine compliance with clinical protocols, professional conduct, patient safety standards, and the roles of all parties involved. It added that the findings would be made public at the conclusion of the process.
The state assured residents that anyone found guilty of negligence or professional misconduct would face appropriate sanctions under existing laws, while urging the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as the investigation continues.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting the health, safety, and rights of residents and to strengthening oversight of medical practice across Lagos State.
