LAGOS: Suspected cultists shoot YABATECH student dead

The tragic incident happened on Tuesday shortly after students completed their exams for the day.

Reports revealed that the student was walking toward the institution’s back gate when a group of armed individuals approached and shot him at close range.

An eyewitness who spoke under the condition of anonymity described the scene as chaotic, noting that students fled in panic after witnessing the attack.

“He had just finished his exams and was on his way out when the attackers appeared and shot him twice,” NAIJAONPOINT said. “It happened very quickly.”

Another student claimed the attackers retrieved a firearm from the victim’s bag, further suggesting a cult-related motive.

“They searched him after shooting and found a gun and a bullet in his bag. They made sure he was dead before leaving,” the student shared.

Sources revealed that the shooting may have been a retaliatory act tied to a previous incident on campus the week before, where a suspected cult member was shot but survived.

“This appears to be a revenge attack,” a source stated.

However, YABATECH’s spokesperson, Adekunle Adams, clarified that the shooting did not occur within the school premises.

“The incident happened at a lounge near the college. There has been no cult-related activity on campus,” he stated.

Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin said the victim was killed by suspected members of a rival cult group.

He also confirmed the recovery of four live rounds of ammunition and charms from the deceased.

“At around 3 pm on Tuesday, a distress call reported the fatal shooting in Yaba. Police responded swiftly, found the victim in a pool of blood, and observed gunshot wounds on his body,” Hundeyin said. The body has since been moved to the morgue for autopsy.

This incident occurred less than 24 hours after a 16-year-old boy named Mustapha was fatally struck by a stray bullet during a suspected cult clash in the Oyingbo area of Ebute Metta.

The violence erupted just after a youth-organized peace walk meant to address cult-related tensions.

In another related incident, residents discovered the bodies of two men—one of whom was beheaded—in the Idimu area.

The bodies were found early Sunday morning along Oladun Road following a late-night attack believed to be linked to cult violence.
