WATCH THE VIDEO HERE A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Epe Constituency 1, Abiodun Tobun, has explained that the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker yesterday was aimed at preserving the “sanctity” and “integrity” of the Assembly. Speaking to reporters, Tobun revealed that the decision to impeach Obasa was unanimously supported by the lawmakers in the 40-member Assembly. He stated, “The Constitution empowers the House to regulate its proceedings. The members collectively decided that they had reached their limit with Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa. Consequently, we unanimously agreed to elect Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda Lasbat as the new Speaker of the House. “This resolution was supported by all members of the parliament. We cannot allow this Assembly to falter. Our duty to our constituents and Lagos State demands that we uphold the sanctity and integrity of this House.” After nearly a decade as Speaker, Obasa’s tenure came to an end yesterday, January 13, 2025, when more than two-thirds of the Assembly voted for his impeachment due to alleged misconduct and other offenses. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, Obasa’s deputy, was immediately elected as the new Speaker, becoming the first woman to lead the legislative body in Lagos State. Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, first joined the Assembly in 2007 and served as Speaker from June 2015 until his removal in January 2025.
