Former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido has called an emergency meeting with top PDP stakeholders from Jigawa and Kano, heightening concerns over the worsening internal crisis shaking the opposition party across the country.
The meeting, which held behind closed doors at Lamido’s office in Kano, came shortly after the Forum of Former PDP Local Government Chairmen in Jigawa urged him to consider leaving the party if the current situation persists.
The Forum said the PDP was being consumed by what it described as a “deepening internal crisis,” which it blamed on failures in the party’s national leadership.
“We are worried about the direction the PDP is heading,” the Forum stated. “The national leadership has not only sidelined Sule Lamido but has also blocked him from contesting for the position of National Chairman. This kind of leadership style is tearing the party apart.”
Members of the Forum argued that longstanding divisions, distrust, and unresolved disputes have weakened the PDP’s structure across the country, posing a serious threat to its chances in future elections.
Their warning comes at a time when tension within the PDP is already high, following controversial congresses and a heated confrontation last week between Bauchi State governor Bala Mohammed and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
As disputes continue to spread from Jigawa to the national level, many within the party believe the leadership must act quickly.
“The party needs urgent intervention,” a PDP source said. “If something is not done now, we may see a major shift that will reshape the PDP.”
For many observers, the outcome of Lamido’s emergency meeting could determine the next chapter of the party’s political direction, both in Jigawa and across Nigeria.
