The Senate of Lagos State University (LASU) has ended the industrial action, paving the way for the resumption of academic and social life across the institution.
Naijaonpoint reports that the Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing university staff unions, withdrew the strike after a meeting with Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, on Thursday, August 7.
This led LASU’s Senate on Monday to adopt the decision to resume activities.
A statement by the university’s Deputy Registrar and PR Coordinator, Oluwayemisi Thomas‑Onashile, confirmed the following resolutions:
- All academic and social activities will begin again from Wednesday, 13 August 2025.
- Students may return to their hostels across the Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe campuses from Wednesday as well.
- The 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations, previously suspended, are now scheduled to begin on Monday, 18 August 2025. Students have been urged to return promptly and prepare adequately.
Naijaonpoint understands that prior to the resolution, LASU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, had made an emotional appeal via the university’s official 𝕏 account, lamenting the “deafening” silence on campus and expressing that it weighed heavily on her heart.
She acknowledged staff welfare improvements, such as full year-end bonuses, promotion opportunities, timely salary, and allowance payments- as evidence that “our voices have been heard.”
She earnestly urged a return to academic normalcy, emphasising the need for unity and the university’s reputation.
It could be recalled that employees of the Lagos State University (LASU) had on July 31st embarked on an indefinite strike action.
The strike involves both academic and non-academic employees of LASU across various levels.
Operating under the auspices of the Joint Action Committee, which comprises the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), the unions in a letter dated July 31, 2025 and sent to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, vowed not to return to work until their demands are met.
