VARCE, in partnership with law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, members of the judiciary, civil society organisations (CSOs), and policy advocates, has renewed its commitment to improving justice for survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Violence Against Children (VAC), and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
This was highlighted during a one-day state-level Laws and Policy Advocacy Workshop, which brought together participants from all zones of the state.
The workshop aimed to strengthen justice systems, fast-track cases of GBV, VAC, and FGM, improve multi-sectoral coordination, establish specialised courts, and enhance survivor-focused legal aid and support services.
The event provided a platform for key actors—including law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, judiciary members, and CSOs—to collaborate on strategies to ensure justice delivery is timely and centred on the needs of survivors.
Participants examined existing legal frameworks, identified policy gaps, and discussed practical solutions to improve survivor-focused responses. One of the key outcomes was the adoption of a comprehensive support package for survivors. This package includes legal counselling, psychosocial support, and clear referral pathways for women and girls at risk.
Speaking at the workshop, representatives from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare, along with law enforcement agencies, reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring survivors are treated with dignity and respect. They also stressed the need for inter-agency collaboration, data sharing, and sustained advocacy for adequate resources.
“This activity marks a significant step towards building a justice system that truly prioritises survivors’ needs,” said Mr Rufai Adebowale, Director of the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare. He noted that the initiative reflects a broader effort within the state to protect vulnerable groups and uphold their rights.
VARCE concluded by pledging continuous support to state actors in driving reforms, building capacity, and ensuring survivors receive prompt and effective assistance.
