The Ondo State Government has urged residents to remain calm and not panic following the circulation of a leaked Department of State Services (DSS) memo warning of a possible attack by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) on some communities in the state.
Naijaonpoint reports that the DSS memo, reportedly addressed to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Akure, raised concerns of a potential threat by the terror group.
However, the government has dismissed fears of imminent danger, assuring citizens that proactive steps are being taken to safeguard lives and property.
In a statement issued on Wednesday (today) in Akure, the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, said the leaked memo was part of “regular intelligence reports” routinely shared among security agencies to enhance coordination and vigilance.
“The Government of Ondo State is aware of the recent security alert memo of the State Security Services addressed to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Akure regarding a possible terrorist attack in some parts of the state, which got leaked to the media,” the statement read.
“Such reports are a normal part of security operations, aimed at identifying and preventing potential threats. These intelligence reports often contain varying levels of threat assessment and are used in joint operations by security agencies to enhance vigilance and take proactive measures.”
Ajanaku assured residents that the government was already working closely with the DSS, the military, and other security agencies to prevent any form of attack, particularly in border areas.
The commissioner stated that the administration of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa remains fully committed to ensuring that Ondo retains its reputation as one of the safest states in the country.
“The Ondo State government, led by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, is in constant contact with security agencies and is taking several steps to protect residents, especially those in border communities,” Ajanaku said.
“The public can be assured that these reports are being acted upon by the government and relevant security agencies, and necessary precautions are being taken to ensure safety and security.”
He added that the emphasis remains on maintaining vigilance, intelligence sharing, and cooperation between security agencies and the government to detect and neutralise potential threats before they occur.
Residents Urged to Stay Calm, Remain Vigilant
The government appealed to residents to go about their normal activities, remain calm, and avoid spreading panic or misinformation.
“We urge residents to continue their daily activities without fear, but to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement or activity to the nearest security agency,” the commissioner advised.
“Citizens must refrain from taking laws into their hands and should instead cooperate with the authorities to ensure that the state remains peaceful.”
Ajanaku reiterated that the situation was under control and that there was no need for anxiety, adding that the government’s focus is to maintain peace and stability across the state.
Naijaonpoint reports that the DSS memo, which found its way into the public domain earlier this week, had warned of a possible plot by ISWAP fighters to infiltrate and launch coordinated attacks on select communities in Ondo State.
While the security alert triggered concern among residents, state authorities and security operatives have since intensified surveillance and fortified border communities as a preventive measure.
Officials insist that the leak does not signify a breakdown in security protocol but rather highlights the ongoing collaboration between intelligence and defence agencies in pre-empting terror threats.
