Tragedy struck the Kogi State University (KSU), Anyigba community this week as a lecturer in the institution, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, was confirmed dead after he reportedly collapsed in a hotel room during a private encounter with a female student.

The incident occurred three days ago and has since sparked widespread reactions on and off the university campus.

According to preliminary reports, Dr. Ibikunle, a senior academic staff and a married man with children, was allegedly in the company of a 20-year-old female student of the university at the time of the incident. He was said to have consumed several cans of energy drinks before collapsing mid-way through what witnesses described as an intimate session.

The student was immediately apprehended by authorities and is currently in the custody of the Nigeria Police Force while investigations continue. Police sources revealed that there are suspicions of possible foul play, including claims of possible poisoning, though this has yet to be confirmed.

When contacted, a police spokesperson in Kogi State stated:

“We can confirm the unfortunate death of a lecturer with Kogi State University. A female student is assisting with our investigations. We urge the public to refrain from speculation as ...-mortem and forensic analysis are ongoing.”

On campus, students have taken to social media to express mixed reactions, with some making light of the situation and others calling for restraint and respect for the deceased’s family.

The university management has yet to release an official statement as of press time.

Dr. Ibikunle was regarded by colleagues as a highly intelligent but controversial figure within the university community. His death, under such circumstances, has left his family, friends, and the academic community in shock.

The police have assured the public that findings from the ongoing investigation will be made public as soon as they are concluded.
