The African Action Congress (AAC) 2023 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has berated President Bola Tinubu over the ₦150 million prize to the Super Falcons of Nigeria for winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2025.
Naijaonpoint reports that Tinubu on Monday evening offered each player a cash reward of $100,000 and each coach and support staff member $50,000.
He also conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 24 players and 11 technical crew members.
Additionally, each team member will receive a three-bedroom apartment under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.
The presidential rewards sparked criticism from some Nigerians.
In a post via 𝕏, Sowore lamented that Nigerian police officers who spend 35 years in service are retired with ₦2 million as gratuity, no house or medical benefits, and a little pension, while the Super Falcons, who trained for 1 year and played for 1 month, were rewarded with ₦150 million and houses.
He wrote, “Life is brutally unfair to Nigeria Police Force @policengofficers! Super Falcons won WAFCON, trained for 1 year, played for 1 month, were rewarded with $100,000 (N150million) each and houses!
“Police officers protected them for decades, worked 35 years, retired with $1,500 (N2million as gratuity), no houses, no medicals, and a little pension!
“The President or the Governor who handed the awards? $1 BILLION in gratuity, lifetime pension, homes everywhere, full medicals”
