Among those watching Victor Osimhen’s heroics with mixed emotions was Gernot Rohr, now Benin’s head coach, and the man who handed the striker his senior international debut.
“We tried, but when you have such a good player like Osimhen… I remember when I brought him into the team, he was 17, here in our first game against Tanzania,” Rohr said as per the Punch.
“I’m very happy to see him like that, but I’m not happy he did it against me. But I hope he can do it in the playoffs for your country, which I love.”
Rohr’s side went into the match dreaming of a first-ever World Cup appearance, but Osimhen’s clinical finishing ended that ambition.
“There was a big disappointment because we wanted to go to the World Cup with Benin for the first time in history,” Rohr admitted. “To win in Nigeria when Nigeria is also playing for the playoffs is something very difficult.”

The forward opened the scoring early after linking up with Samuel Chukwueze, doubled the lead before half-time, and completed his hat-trick with a header that struck ... before rolling in. Frank Onyeka’s late strike sealed a commanding win for Nigeria, who finished second in Group C behind South Africa.
With 29 goals in 44 appearances, Osimhen is now closing in on Yekini’s record of 37.
