French President, Emmanuel Macron has reappointed Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister, just days after accepting his resignation following the collapse of his short-lived government.
In a statement released by the Élysée Palace on Friday, the presidency said, “The president of the republic has named Mr Sébastien Lecornu prime minister and has charged him with forming a government.”
Naijaonpoint understands that Lecornu, who unveiled his cabinet late Sunday, faced immediate backlash after his interior minister publicly criticised his ministerial picks that same night. By Monday morning, he had tendered his resignation, which Macron accepted.
However, Macron later asked him to lead consultations with opposition leaders to identify a replacement quickly. After two days of failed talks, Macron reverted to reinstating Lecornu.
The collapse of Lecornu’s first cabinet and Macron’s decision to reappoint him have fuelled comparisons between France and politically unstable European countries like Italy.
According to CNN, critics argue that Macron’s move suggests “more of the same,” rather than a real shift in approach.
Lecornu’s initial cabinet, which took nearly a month to assemble, was criticised for featuring more Macron loyalists than even the president’s very first cabinet in 2017.
