Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has admitted that his side have to address their challenges in front of goal as the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations enters the knockout stages, Footynaija.com reports.
Madugu’s Falcons ran riot in their opening game of the tournament, putting three goals past Tunisia to kick-start their WAFCON campaign in scintillating fashion. However, they struggled in their two subsequent games, needing a last minute winner against Botswana before completely failing to find the back of the net against Algeria.
Ahead of their quarter-final clash against Zambia where the Super Falcons cannot afford to let their difficulties in front of goal take center stage, Madugu acknowledged the need to quickly find a solution to what he termed a “source of concern” for his team.
“Prior to this tournament, we’ve been playing games and we were scoring goals in a lot of them,” he said in a recent interview.
“In this tournament, goalscoring has become a challenge for us. We have to break things over and do a lot.
“We have little time to be able to work on that, but it is an area that is becoming a source of concern and worry for us.
“The same players that were scoring before now are the same ones still playing, so, why they’re not getting the goals is something we have to look at and work on.”
The Super Falcons will be out for revenge in this upcoming fixture, having lost to Zambia in the third-place playoff of the last edition back in 2022. Both sides will lock horns at Stade Larbi Zaouli on Friday, July 18 and it promises to be a highly entertaining encounter.
