Magic: The Gathering Announces Monster Hunter Secret Lair Crossover

Following the release of the highly anticipated crossover with Avatar: The Last Airbender, Magic: The Gathering seems to already be preparing for its next major crossover with one of its most exciting collaboration partners yet, featuring Capcom’s Monster Hunter franchise. Having been teased the day prior with a tagline saying “Hunter Rank Required: ???” on the official Secret Lair website, all the cards in the official crossover were quietly revealed ahead of schedule.

While no images of the cards have been shown just yet, a press release seemingly revealed that the Secret Lair Superdrop will be available from December 1 at 9:00 AM until December 22 at 11:59 PM PST, unless it sells out beforehand. This release, which IGN referred to as “very odd“, has since been deleted. Releasing in four separate drops titled The Hunt, The Hunters, The Monsters, and The Monster II, with each consisting of reprints for existing MTG cards.

While the circumstances surrounding Magic: The Gathering‘s quickly removed press release are more than a little confusing, it was fairly clear about what to expect from the upcoming Secret Lair collaboration as a whole. The release also noted that the four separate reprinted Secret Lair drops will also be priced at $29.99 for a regular, and $39.99 for a foil edition, respectively.

Featuring card art ranging across the franchise all the way from Monster Hunter Freedom 2 all the way to Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, there is plenty for fans of the iconic series to sink their teeth into.

The first of the four sets from MTG’s Secret Lair superdrop is The Hunt, which is filled with non-creature spells that are themed after “the terrifying attacks that monsters from the Monster Hunter franchise can unleash“, with a separate color identity for each of the five powerful spells included in the drop:

Next up are The Hunters of the Monster Hunter world themselves, featuring five powerful human creature cards, which once again follow the same unique color identity for each of the five cards as the previous set:

Lastly, the set includes plenty of The Monsters from across the series themselves, although the press release did not specify which of the 9 Secret Lair cards would be included in either The Monsters or The Monsters II drops, the following creature cards have been confirmed:

Monster Hunter Is The Perfect Fit For A Universes Beyond Collab

After having played Monster Hunter Wilds and several other games in the franchise, Magic: The Gathering‘s latest collaboration couldn’t have picked a better candidate for the perfect Secret Lair collaboration, with the latest set having the potential to be one of the best drops of the year.

Although it’s a little disappointing that we’re only getting a Secret Lair drop of reprinted cards as opposed to a full set release, the popularity of Monster Hunter‘s Secret Lair collaboration could lead to even more crossover content in the future, especially after the success of MTG‘s Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set.

Thankfully, with how many crossovers the Monster Hunter franchise has been doing lately, from a surprise partnership with DOTA 2 and a second collaboration with the Arknights mobile game, it’s likely only a matter of time before we see even more crossovers with Capcom’s best-selling franchise and Magic: The Gathering.
