Magic: The Gathering x Avatar: The Last Airbender Exclusive Card Preview

Ahead of Magic: The Gathering‘s crossover with Avatar: The Last Airbender, Screen Rant has been provided with an exclusive sneak peek at 5 new cards arriving in the new Universes Beyond set. Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s latest exclusive preview focuses on a few characters and moments from Book 2 of the animated series.

While you’ll have to wait until the November 14–20 pre-release event at the earliest to get your hands on these cards through sealed products, it’s a good opportunity to plan out any additions you might want to make to your collection later on. On the official release date of November 21, you’ll be able to buy the previewed cards Bumi, King of Three Trials, The Earth King, Earth Kingdom Jailer, alongside reprints of Empty City Ruse and Scout’s Warning​​​​​.

Plenty To Look Forward To For Powerful Earthbending Decks

The first card in Screen Rant’s exclusive preview is the large 6-mana Bumi, King of Three Trials​​​​​​, which takes advantage of the new Lesson card type introduced in 2021’s Strixhaven: School of Mages. Allowing you to either gain a +1/+1 counter, Scry 3, or Earthbend 3 with ATLA‘s newest mechanic, you’ll need to have at least 3 Lessons in your graveyard to take full advantage of Bumi’s entry effects.

The next creature card unveiled in this Avatar: The Last Airbender set preview is Earth Kingdom Jailer, which has the classic ability to exile a 3-mana card from an opponent until it leaves the battlefield. While the ability isn’t too powerful on its own, being a 3/3 creature helps it stand out more with a bit more versatility.

The last original creature in the preview is The Earth King himself, a 4-mana legendary green creature with the ability to summon and use powerful tokens. On top of creating a 4/4 bear upon entering, The Earth King also provides a powerful land draw engine for large creature decks, allowing you to search for and play a tapped mana for each attacking creature with power 4 or greater.

The next two cards showcased are full-art reprints of Scout’s Warning from 2007’s Future Sight set, and the legacy card Empty City Ruse, returning from the limited release of Portal Three Kingdoms in 1999.

As an instant spell, the 1-mana Scout’s Warning lets you play your next creature with flash regardless of whether it’s your turn or not, while Empty City Ruse completely skips a target opponent’s attack phase for only a single white mana.

Even More Potential For Creative Combos

You can use virtually any Lesson to activate it, but Bumi, King of Three Trials‘ ability can shine even greater when paired with some of the new lessons arriving in the new Magic: The Gathering set, most notably with Earthbending Lessons, Airbending Lessons, and Waterbending Lessons, respectively.

Although a bit too niche to use as a reliable combo, cards like Angel’s Trumpet are a great way to punish opponents for not attacking after casting Empty City Ruse, while setting you up for a lethal attack. Meanwhile, instants like Scout’s Warning are great for catching your opponents off guard, with cards like Darien, King of Kjeldor letting you make an army of tokens with the right timing.

If previewed cards are anything to go by, there’s plenty to be excited for when the Magic: The Gathering X Avatar: The Last Airbender crossover releases.
