Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has appointed a former member of the House of Representatives, Saheed Fijabi, as the Chairman of the Oyo State at 50 Anniversary Committee, ahead of the state’s golden jubilee celebration.
The appointment was contained in a letter signed by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Segun Ogunwuyi, and obtained by PUNCH Online in Ibadan, the state capital.
According to the letter, the 11-member committee is expected to commence work immediately in preparation for the milestone event.
The statement listed other members of the committee, including a former Head of Service of the state, Mrs Ololade Agboola, who will serve as Deputy Chairman.
Other members are Z.O. Ajuwon, Mustapha Areo, Fatimah Azeez, S.A. Adejumo, John Alabi, A.K. Bello, and Fatai Owoseni, a former Lagos State Commissioner of Police.
Ronke Adedayo was named as Secretary, while the Director-General of Protocol, Samuel Badejo, completes the list of appointees.
“The appointment takes immediate effect,” the letter stated.
Naijaonpoint reports that Oyo State was created on February 3, 1976, by the military government of the late General Murtala Mohammed.
The state was carved out of the old Western State as part of a nationwide restructuring exercise designed to bring governance closer to the people and promote balanced regional development.
At inception, Oyo State covered the territory that now includes Osun State, which was later separated in August 1991 under the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida.
Over the past five decades, Oyo has transformed from its agrarian and educational roots into a central hub of commerce, culture, and politics in Nigeria’s South-West.
The upcoming 50th anniversary is expected to celebrate Oyo’s achievements in education, economy, culture, and infrastructure, while highlighting future development plans.
