A former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has raised alarm over what he described as a coordinated plot to destabilise Kebbi State through the importation of political thugs, foreign mercenaries, and illegal arms trafficking.

In a petition dated September 10, 2025, and addressed to the National Security Adviser, Inspector General of Police, Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Comptroller-Generals of Immigration and Civil Defence, Malami alleged that powerful political actors were behind the rising security threats in the state.

According to a statement on Thursday by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mohammad Doka, the former AGF, who now leads the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi, accused some politicians of collaborating with mercenaries from Niger Republic and arming them through illegal channels.

“The alleged operatives are being deployed to intimidate citizens, suppress opposition voices, and disrupt peace in Kebbi. This threat is backed by credible intelligence and personal experience,” Malami said.

Malami recalled the September 1 attack on his convoy in Birnin Kebbi, where suspected thugs vandalised 10 vehicles and injured supporters.

He described the incident as “painful and unfortunate,” alleging that the attackers came from the APC headquarters.

But the APC denied involvement, with its spokesman, Isa Assalafy, insisting, “No government that enjoys the massive support of the people and is confident of victory in 2027 would want the peace of the state disrupted.”

Assalafy instead claimed that security operatives in Malami’s convoy fired shots during the incident.

In the petition, Malami went further to accuse some political figures in the state of maintaining covert ties with the terrorist group known as Lakurawa.

He described the situation as a “national security emergency” that transcended local politics and posed a direct threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty.

He therefore urged the NSA and other security chiefs to urgently coordinate inter-agency efforts, secure border communities against infiltration, and investigate the alleged collusion between state officials and terrorist elements.

The petition, which was copied to the DSS, Police, Immigration, and Civil Defence, underscored what Malami called the grave security risks facing Kebbi State.
