The Senior Special Assistant to the President Bola Tinubu, on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, has asserted that it is the responsibility of the opposition party to cry wolf in a democratic system.
Naijaonpoint reports that Ajayi made this known while reacting to a joint statement by the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition members that democracy is under threat over the investigation of the former Governors, Nasir El-Rufai and Aminu Tambuwal, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over corruption allegations.
In a post on Monday via 𝕏, Tinubu’s aide stated that being in opposition does not confer immunity from law enforcement or prosecution.
He wrote, “Opposition elements in a joint statement signed by former VP Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi, Senator David Mark and Chief Oyegun and others said democratic is under threat in Nigeria because Malami, El-Rufai, Tambuwal are being investigated over corruption allegations.
“It is the duty of the opposition to cry wolf. It is allowed in a democracy.
“However, it must be said that being in opposition does not confer immunity against law enforcement and prosecution.
“Those who proclaimed they want to rescue Nigeria from all conceivable ailments should not line up, as cheerleaders, behind the people who have been accused of corruption.
“Malami and others who have matters before EFCC should be told to defend their stewardship in public office.”
Ajayi’s comments came after the former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, accused the EFCC of revoking his bail for attending a political rally in Kebbi State.
However, the EFCC stated that Malami had not met the five conditions attached to his provisional bail and described his claims as untenable.
