A violent crisis that broke out on Friday in the Okon-Aku community, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, has claimed the life of a youth, Igwe Akuma, from the Ndi Uma compound.

The unrest also led to the destruction of property, including houses and vehicles, as angry youths reportedly set them ablaze in a retaliatory wave of violence.

Reacting to the incident, the Udumeze of Ohafia, Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, and the Ohafia Council of Monarchs issued a joint statement on Saturday condemning the killing and the subsequent acts of arson.

According to the apex traditional body, Igwe Akuma was said to be preparing for his wedding in a few days before his tragic death.

“The Udumeze condemns in its entirety the gruesome murder of a young Ohafian who was said to be getting married in a few days,” the statement read.

The monarchs described the act as unjustifiable and called for restraint among community members, stating that “killing and destruction are not the best ways to begin a new year.”

The traditional rulers appealed for peace between the Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma compounds, urging residents to refrain from further violence.

They assured that the Council was working closely with relevant security agencies to prevent an escalation of the conflict.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, told Daily Post that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ohafia led officers to the scene and made some arrests.

She also disclosed that two tactical teams were deployed to restore and maintain peace in the area.

“The arrested suspects are currently undergoing interrogation,” Chinaka said, adding that police presence would be maintained to ensure law and order.

The authorities have urged residents to remain calm while investigations continue.
