A peacekeeping mission in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State turned deadly on Monday after soldiers reportedly opened fire on unarmed protesters, killing at least nine persons, including five women.
The victims were among residents demonstrating against what they described as the government’s failure to protect them from repeated attacks by unidentified assailants targeting their communities.
According to reports, the peaceful protest was led by women chanting and calling for help after weeks of violent incursions that left several villages exposed and fearful.
Eyewitnesses told Daily Sun that chaos erupted when military personnel allegedly tried to disperse the gathering. The situation escalated quickly, leading to live ammunition being fired into the crowd.
Following the shootings, violent clashes broke out and spread to nearby villages. Communities reportedly affected by the unrest include Tingno, Suwa, Balaifi, Wami 1, Wami 2, and Waduku, many of which were reportedly set ablaze.
A local resident, speaking anonymously due to security concerns, said the actual death toll may be higher than initially reported.
“What we are seeing on the ground is far worse. The situation has spiralled out of control, and more bodies are still being discovered,” the source said.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigerian Army nor the Adamawa State Government had released an official statement regarding the incident.
The security situation in Lamurde remains tense, with residents fleeing for safety amid fears of more violence.
