A yet-to-be-confirmed number of persons have been feared killed after unknown gunmen launched a deadly attack near Afor Market Junction in Nawfia community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday.
Residents reported panic and confusion as the armed assailants opened fire on unsuspecting members of the community. Several victims were fatally injured, while others fled in different directions for safety.
One resident said, “The armed hoodlums invaded Afor Market Junction and immediately opened fire, killing many people. Nobody knows the reason behind the attack. Our community is in shock.”
Eyewitnesses who spoke to PUNCH described the attack as “commando-style”, saying the gunmen appeared suddenly and began shooting indiscriminately. Video clips circulating online show residents running for safety while several bodies lie in pools of blood.
The President-General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, confirmed the incident in a statement late Sunday. He said security agencies have been contacted and investigations are underway.
Okoye said, “This tragic attack has resulted in multiple casualties caused by unknown assailants. I strongly condemn this senseless act and the attempt to disrupt the peace of our community. Security agencies have been alerted and are working to uncover those responsible.”
He urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with security operatives.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the families affected. We assure the community of our full support as efforts continue to restore peace,” he added.
The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached for official confirmation. However, a police source, speaking anonymously, said investigations have begun and efforts are ongoing to track down the perpetrators.
“We condemn these heinous acts and assure the public that we will do everything possible to bring the culprits to justice,” the source said.
