Marco Silva teases potential position switch for Fulham’s Super Eagles star ahead of stern Manchester United test

Marco Silva and his Fulham side welcome Manchester United to Craven Cottage on matchday 2 of the Premier League and it appears that Super Eagles center back Calvin Bassey could potentially find himself at left back on Sunday, Footynaija.com reports.

Bassey was a standout performer at the heart of defense for Fulham last season but the Nigeria international found himself out wide in the Cottagers’ season opener against Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend due to the absence of left backs Antonee Robinson and Ryan Sessegnon through injury.

The versatile Super Eagles defender gave a decent account of himself in that game, putting up a solid performance as Fulham battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the American Express Stadium.

With the return of Sessegnon and Robinson ahead of Manchester United’s visit still doubtful, Fulham manager Marco Silva admitted that Bassey could be set to take up that role again and expressed confidence in the Super Eagles star’s ability to deliver like he did against Brighton.

“We’re going to decide tomorrow [on the availability of Sessegnon]. If not, as you mentioned, we have Calvin who can play there and if needed, even [Jorge] Cuenca can play there as well,” Silva said in his pre-match preview.

“What Calvin showed and the way he played [against Brighton]a was a great, great performance at left-back against a very tough winger., and I think we are more than covered in that position.”

In recent years, Premier League meetings between Fulham and Manchester United have always been closely fought affairs, so much so that their last six clashes have been decided by one-goal margins. History also favours the Red Devils who have ended up victorious on five of those six occasions.
