The DC Universe is bringing one of Batman’s most iconic supervillains to the big screen with Clayface, which is already looking to stand out in James Gunn’s franchise. Since August 2025, one of the next films in the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters slate has been filming, but this time focusing on a villain rather than one of DC’s many superheroes.
Starring Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, a.k.a. the titular foe, the Clayface movie centers on an actor who goes through a monstrous transformation, allowing him to shapeshift into anyone he wants. James Watkins is directing, based on a script from Mike Flanagan, as the entry got added to the line-up long after DC Studios’ initial January 2023 announcement.
During a new interview with Collider, Max Minghella, who is one of the handful of confirmed cast members in the comic book film installment, spoke about his upcoming comic book film debut. As he is “working on Clayface right now in London,” the star assured that the film does not hold back when it comes to the horror element.
“I think I can say safely it’s going there – it’s a proper movie. It’s a really fantastic script,” he said when speaking to the body horror aspect. According to Gunn, during an episode of DC Studios: Showcase on June 20, 2025, Watkins’ movie will be R-rated, making it the first one for the DCU timeline.
On August 11, 2025, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Minghella was in talks to join the project in a mystery role. While his character’s name is being kept under wraps, the trade noted that he will portray a Gotham City police detective who is romantically involved with the Elizabeth Holmes-inspired scientist whom Hagen turns to after his disfigurement.
The scientist role is reportedly what Naomi Ackie is set to play, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which unveiled her casting on July 22, 2025. Similar to Minghella’s role, her character’s identity has not been disclosed by DC Studios.
With Clayface being one of the upcoming DCU movies, the R-rated installment is coming at a time when the horror genre has been a commercial hit for Warner Bros. 2025 saw the studio’s box office success with Sinners, Final Destination Bloodlines, and recently Weapons.
As the DCU entry is reportedly working with a budget of $40 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter on February 21, 2025, it is following a similar production cost as Sinners, Final Destination Bloodlines, and Weapons. Clayface is currently set to release in theaters on September 11, 2026.
