Meryl Streep & Sigourney Weaver Star In Useful Idiots Thriller By Apple TV+ Director

Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver have just signed on to star in a new thriller movie called Useful Idiots from the director of an Apple TV sci-fi series. They’ve each won multiple awards, including three Oscars for Streep (Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice and The Iron Lady) and two Golden Globes for Weaver (Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl).

They have never starred in a project together before, despite being two of the most iconic actors in the entertainment industry. That’s all about to change, though, now that Streep and Weaver have been cast in Useful Idiots, according to Deadline.

The director, Joseph Cedar, has helmed films such as Time of Favor and Campfire. He also earned Oscar nominations for Beaufort and Footnote. On the small screen, he directed HBO’s Our Boys and the Apple TV sci-fi series Constellation.

Cedar and Shachar Bar-On wrote the script together; Bar-On is currently a producer on 60 Minutes.

Zhang Xin, Jonathan King, Bruce Cohen and William Horberg are on board as producers, with Graham Taylor, Christopher Slager and Dan Guando working behind the scenes as executive producers.

The search is currently on for a movie studio to distribute Useful Idiots in theaters, but Fifth Season and Black Bear are the production companies involved in the project.

In Useful Idiots, Streep will play a journalist named Diane Castle whose expertise includes luxury properties in New York. She starts feeling frustrated over constantly having to write about the wealthy. However, everything changes when she starts investigating the new buyer of a penthouse who paid a record-breaking figure.

Along the way, she uncovers mysteries and discovers shocking secrets involving corruption. By continuing to dig around in this story, Diane and her family end up in the crosshairs.

Details about Weaver’s character have not been revealed. But considering the star power she brings to the film, it’s possible that she will play the owner of the penthouse at the center of Diane’s investigation.

While Streep and Weaver have never worked together before, they each have established impressive careers in the entertainment industry.

Aside from Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice and The Iron Lady, Streep’s big screen credits include The Deer Hunter, Out of Africa, Postcards from the Edge, The Bridges of Madison County, The Manchurian Candidate, The Devil Wears Prada, Mamma Mia! and Julie & Julia.

In recent years, Streep has gravitated to the small screen via Big Little Lies and Only Murders in the Building, both of which earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. She’s currently filming The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Weaver, meanwhile, is best known for starring in the iconic Alien franchise and Ghostbusters movies. After working with James Cameron on Aliens, the director cast her in Avatar.

The third film in that sci-fi series, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will be released in theaters on December 19, 2025.

Now Streep and Weaver are joining forces for the thriller film Useful Idiots. A release date hasn’t been announced yet, but fans of these two legendary actors should keep an eye out for more details to be revealed in the coming months.
