Meta's nuclear plant for AI centers is at risk due to bees

In the artificial intelligence era, the tech industry has become more energy-hungry than ever. As a result, several major players have been investing in new power generation centers to fuel their ongoing AI-based developments. Consequently, nuclear energy has gained popularity due to its emission-free nature. Meta was looking to build a nuclear-powered AI data center, but it seems that some bees have prevented it from doing so.

Companies financing energy supply centers need to ensure that they not only provide a significant amount of power but also align with environmental objectives. Therefore, the importance of wind and solar farms, along with nuclear plants, have increased significantly. Google has already made large related investments, and Microsoft is also looking to reactivate a nuclear plant. Meanwhile, Meta faces an unforeseen obstacle that will prove challenging to overcome.

Rare bee species reportedly prevents Meta from building its nuclear plant for AI centers

The Times reported that a rare species of bee lives on the land where Meta planned to build a nuclear power plant. In such cases, environmental laws prohibit further construction in the area to ensure the survival of the species. Due to their importance to the environment, bees are already highly protected insects. The discovery of a rare species further complicates matters for Mark Zuckerberg’s company.

According to the source, Zuckerberg himself informed the staff that they would not be able to continue with the project. At present, it remains unclear whether the company is actively seeking a new location to initiate the plant’s construction. In similar situations, there are alternative locations available in case a problem arises. However, there is no confirmation as to whether this is the case with Meta.

Other big players are getting ahead of Meta

Currently, no tech brand has managed to successfully establish AI centers powered by nuclear energy. While Microsoft wants to reopen the Three Mile Island plant, it still needs to obtain prior approval. On the other hand, Google has already reached agreements with the startup Kairos Power to establish up to seven small nuclear reactors in the US. However, Google’s investment will pay off starting in 2030.

Amazon, another prominent player in AI development, has also secured agreements to build small modular reactors. Meanwhile, Meta is still looking for more agreements related to clean energy.
