Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) have killed a key Boko Haram commander, Amir Dumkei, and five other insurgents, during a fierce confrontation in the Lake Chad region.

Naijaonpoint reports that this was revealed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the MNJTF spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba.

According to the statement, the terrorists, suspected to be members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP)/Boko Haram faction, launched an attack on the MNJTF military base situated on Koulfoua Island in the early hours of Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

However, they were met with overwhelming resistance from the troops.

Osoba said, “The ISWAP/Boko Haram terrorists initiated their offensive, attacking the MNJTF military base in Koulfoua Island. They were met with superior firepower from the MNJTF troops.”

Osoba disclosed that the combined firepower, including intense artillery shelling and coordinated bombardments, led to the elimination of the high-ranking commander, Amir Dumkei, and five of his fighters. Others reportedly fled with gunshot wounds.

The troops also recovered nine AK-47 rifles, three boats, and a substantial cache of ammunition during the encounter.

“Currently, the troops are in pursuit of the fleeing terrorists, and clearance operations are ongoing to ensure the area is secure,” the statement added.

The Force Commander of the MNJTF, Major General Godwin Mutkut, lauded the courage and professionalism of the troops, reaffirming the Task Force’s commitment to eradicating terrorism from the Lake Chad Basin.

“The operation underscores the relentless efforts and bravery of the MNJTF in maintaining peace and stability in the region,” Mutkut said.
