THE Flamingos are on the verge of elimination from the Morocco 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup following a second consecutive defeat.

The Nigerian girls lost 1-0 to France in Sale tonight, three days after going down 4-1 to Canada in their opening group match.

With two defeats from two matches, the chances of the Flamingos advancing to the round of 16 are extremely thin, as they can now only go through as one of the best third-placed teams if they win their final group fixture.

France scored in the second half to punch their ticket into the next round after a drab first half of few opportunities.

Nigeria’s clearest chance in the first half came from Chisom Nwachukwu’s fine set-piece, but France goalkeeper Chevray Lauryne was right on the spot to tip it over the bar for a corner kick.

The Flamingos had another good chance in the 50th minute when Queen Joseph’s delivery from a corner kick fell to the path of Nwachukwu, whose close-range left-footed shot was once again kept out by goalkeeper Lauryne.

Substitute Laboucarie Luna nearly put France in front in the 62nd minute after Nigeria’s goalkeeper Elizabeth Boniface’s
attempt to close down an attacker bearing on goal failed, but Jumai Adebayo’s goal-line clearance kept the Flamingos in the game.

France found the breakthrough late on as Maissa Fathallah’s low strike beat Boniface in the 81st minute for the only goal of the match.

The defeat leaves the Flamingos with zero points from two games.

The Flamingos face Samoa Island in the last group game of the campaign on Saturday.
