Mortal Kombat 2 Star Warns How Brutal The Fatalities Will Be To Audiences

Mortal Kombat II star Lewis Tan hypes the fatalities to come, warning audiences that their favorites may not make it out alive. Serving as a sequel to the 2021 reboot, the upcoming Mortal Kombat video game adaptation is set to bring a number of new characters into the fold as the Earthrealm faces destruction at the hands of Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford).

Tan, who returns as Cole Young, tells ComicBook.com that this fight for the Earthrealm will result in a number of shocking and gruesome fatalities. According to the star, no character is off limits for death in Mortal Kombat 2, and he think some viewers may get upset. Check out his comment below:

They should be worried for everyone, to be honest. In different versions of the script, different people died. I was like, ‘No way.’ Then, they changed it and switched it. By the end of it, nobody is safe. Anybody could die… and there are a lot of fatalities in the second movie. If your favorite character dies, it’s not the end. Death is only the beginning. Don’t be too upset, but there are a lot of fatalities. Some people are going to be happy and some are going to be really p-ssed off.”

Outside of the bone-crunching fatalities, Tan also teases that he gets a particularly big fight sequence in a unique location from the games that he was quite proud of. Though the actor is careful not to share too many details, he does hype the appearance of some special fighting moves:

“I do have an epic fight in Mortal Kombat II. I can’t tell you who it is with, but when you know who it is with, you will know why it’s so epic. It is in one of my favorite video game locations. I was super-grateful to get that location because it’s such a cool design. That one took about three weeks to film, which is a long time.

“The style of the fight is very unique. You’ll get to see some moves you didn’t see in the first one, some character special moves. When the first movie ends, Cole had just discovered these new powers. You will see some new stuff that is very cool. It’s a fan-favorite fight, for sure. We shot that baby over three weeks.”

The sequel is approaching with quite a bit of momentum. Though reviews for 2021’s Mortal Kombat were mixed from critics, the film went over well with audiences and Warner Bros. is seemingly leaning into this next installment, recently pushing it from an October 2025 release to May 2026.

Tan’s comment suggests the sequel is upping the ante when it comes to violence and fatalities following the Mortal Kombat ending. As for the characters who could be next to die, the sequel is set to feature some big returns and new additions, most notably Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, who has been front and center in the movie’s marketing.

The Mortal Kombat 2 cast is also set to feature Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, and Mehcad Brooks as Jax, among others.

As Tan’s comment suggests, Mortal Kombat 2‘s fatalities don’t mean those characters will be gone forever. The franchise is built around characters who die in gruesome ways only to return in new forms or alternate realms. Kano, for example, seemingly died in the 2021 movie, but he’s set to return in the sequel. Sub-Zero, similarly, is returning as Noob Saibot.

It remains to be seen who exactly will die in Mortal Kombat 2, but audiences can clearly be confident that the deaths will be especially brutal. Should a third movie move forward, though, it certainly sounds like death won’t prevent some fan favorites from returning for another round.
