Motorola is developing AI LAMs for smartphones

We all know Motorola as a hardware company, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t venture into the intangible world. Along with delivering smartphones like the latest Edge phones, Motorola is also working on AI LAMs that can function on smartphones.

What are LAMs?

An LAM is a type of AI model. Similar to an LLM (Large Language Model), an LAM (Large Action model) powers different AI platforms, and can exist on different types of devices. What sets an LAM apart from an LLM is all in its name; Action. LLMs are great for generating text, but LAMs are designed to take action. Imagine an AI tool that can dig into an app on your phone and perform an action within that app.

We’ve seen examples of AIs that can perform actions within apps and other platforms like Apple Intelligence (well, potentially), Google Gemini, and the ill-fated Rabbit R1. We’re still waiting for a future where you can just tell an AI model to update your Facebook status. However, that future remains just out of reach.

Fear not! Motorola is working on AI LAMs

That future may not be so far off, as Motorola, one of the biggest smartphone companies in the world, is working on some powerful AI that could perform actions on your behalf. The company posted a short and sweet concept video showing the kind of AI-driven future it wants.

In the video, we see a woman telling an AI model to order her a coffee from Starbucks and then order an Uber for her. The AI reached into the apps and performed all of the tasks while giving her verbal feedback along the way.

Since this is just a concept video, we can’t take this as an official announcement. There’s no telling how far along Motorola is on this project. What we do know is that this LAM would be able to learn from your habits, so it might be able to memorize your orders or locations.

With Motorola jumping on the AI train, there’s another heavy hitter in the market. We can’t wait to see what the company has planned.
