Massive protests have broken out in Mozambique after the Supreme Court upheld the election of ruling party candidate Daniel Chapo as the winner of the country’s presidential election held in October.

Venâncio Mondlane, the runner-up in the election, has called on his supporters to protest the results, alleging electoral fraud. The protests have seen demonstrators chanting Mondlane’s name while burning tires, blocking roads, and clashing with police.

In response, police have used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. Mondlane, who has fled the country, claims he is being targeted by police and revealed that two of his aides were shot in October.

The court ruling declared Chapo the winner with 65% of the vote, a figure lower than the 71% announced by the electoral commission earlier.
