Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has issued strict and unusual directives on how he wants to be buried, declaring that his body should be handed over to the Ekiti State Government immediately after his death.
Fayose, who turned 65 today, made the remarks in a video released during his birthday celebration, where he addressed his family, supporters and the general public.
In the video, the former governor said his remains must be taken over by the state regardless of when he dies and that his burial must not exceed four weeks.
He stressed that his funeral should follow whatever arrangements the government decides, noting that his body “belongs to Ekiti.”
His comments have stirred reactions across political circles, as the two-term governor rarely speaks openly about personal matters, especially subjects as sensitive as his burial plans.
Fayose said the instructions were deliberate and were being documented officially.
According to him, a written letter is already being prepared for the state governor.
He insisted that once he passes on, the government should assume full responsibility without delay.
He stated: “Remember me for anything. And when I die, let me say this. Death is inevitable. My body belongs to the Ekiti State Government… I’m delivering a letter to the governor.”
He added that the four-week window was to give the government enough time to put arrangements in place.
Fayose also directed that his children must appear in their normal clothes during the burial and obey whatever guidelines the state issues at that time.
Speaking on where he wants to be laid to rest, Fayose said he has already prepared a spot at his grandmother’s home — the garden belonging to his late father’s mother.
He instructed that once he is buried there, the place should no longer be visited by anyone, including family members.
In his words: “My grandmother’s home, the mother of my father, I’ve made the garden there. I should be laid to rest there.
After my departure, nobody must come there again. Allow me to go. If you want to show me love, if you want to take care of me, do so now.”
The video also captured moments from his birthday thanksgiving where music icon King Sunny Ade performed as Fayose danced on stage, surrounded by friends and political associates.
Across the country, prominent politicians issued goodwill messages to celebrate him.
Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji praised Fayose’s influence and described him as a leader with strong grassroots connection and unwavering commitment to the progress of the state.
The Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, also celebrated him, calling him a “valuable friend and brother” and wishing him long life.
Nevertheless, Fayose has remained a major voice in Ekiti politics even after leaving office, often making bold and controversial statements on national issues.
His latest declaration adds another chapter to his reputation for unusual political style and frankness.
